Self Assessment Guide
If you or your parents are aging and questioning whether home care is needed, it is useful to know how a geriatric care manager thinks about aging safely in the home.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) are the basic things people need to be able to do each day: Dressing, Eating, Walking, Transferring from a bed to a chair, or arising from a chair to standing, Toileting, and Grooming.
Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL’s) are more complicated functions: Telephone Use, Shopping, Food Preparation, Housekeeping, Laundry, Transportation, Medication Management and Ability to Handle Finances.
Home Care is designed to assist individuals who are having difficulty with any of these daily functions because of health or cognitive issues with the overall goal to maintain safety and a sense of independence.
Click this link to see our Self-Assessment Tool, which will help you score the various activities, and to what degree home care might be indicated: Self Assessment Tool
